Rimfire Steel Challenge Basics
Getting started in .22LR steel shooting
Welcome to Rimfire Steel!
Rimfire Steel Challenge is one of the most accessible shooting sports out there. The ammo is cheap, the guns are affordable, and the fun is off the charts. Here's what you need to know to get started at the Willow Hole Cowboys.
Rifle Shooter
- Any reliable .22 LR semi-automatic rifle (Ruger 10/22 is the gold standard)
- At least 5 magazines — you'll need them for stage runs
- A red dot sight is highly recommended but iron sights work too
- A simple sling is helpful for carrying between stages
Tip: A Ruger 10/22 with a red dot and a few BX-25 magazines is the perfect starter setup.
Pistol Shooter
- Any reliable .22 LR semi-automatic pistol
- Popular choices: Ruger Mark IV, Browning Buckmark, S&W Victory
- At least 5 magazines to get through a stage without reloading
- A red dot makes a huge difference if your pistol supports it
Tip: Revolver shooters can use speed loaders or shoot single-action style. Optics are allowed on revolvers too.
How a Match Works
- Stages: Typically 5-6 stages, each with a different array of steel targets at 5-20 yards
- Scoring: Raw time plus 3 seconds per miss. Your 4 fastest strings out of 5 count
- Run order: Shooters are divided into squads and rotate through stages
- R.O.: Each stage has a Range Officer who runs the shooters and keeps score
- Safety: Firearms are handled only at the safe table or under RO direction
Tips for New Shooters
- Go slow at first — speed comes with practice. Focus on hitting the targets cleanly
- Bring plenty of ammo — plan for 200-300 rounds for your first match
- Watch before you shoot — observe a few shooters on your first stage to learn the flow
- Ask for help — our members are friendly and happy to show you the ropes
- Eye and ear protection — required at all times on the range
