The Grand Army of the Frontier serves to honor the memories and achievements of the late Victorian-era military of all nations between 1860 and 1902, with a particular emphasis on the American army on the Western Frontier between 1860 and 1900 — through knowledge, Cowboy Action Shooting, reenacting, living history, skirmishing, and social events while wearing appropriate military attire.

What is a Muster?

  • This Division of Texas Muster includes
    Two (2) skirmishes
    Long range competition
    Precision pistol competition
    Sharpshooter side match

What is a Skirmish?

  • Typically a dozen or more rifle targets and four sidearm targets
  • Expect to reload rifle and sidearm on the clock
  • Come to the line empty; load under observation; start with actions closed on empty chambers
  • Longer ranges: sidearm ~12–20 yards; long gun ~30–80 yards
  • Downrange movement on some/all skirmishes
  • No preset course of fire — engage targets as you acquire them; all targets must be hit
  • No movement with a loaded round in the chamber
  • If you run out of ammunition, hand-to-hand (knock down remaining targets) applies

FAQ

Do I have to be a GAF member?

Yes. You will be enlisted when you submit registration for the Muster. There is no cost and no hassle. Your information will not be shared.

Do I have to wear a uniform?

No — unless you register in a Military class.

Can I shoot my cowboy guns?

Yes. Civilian categories are for participants who don’t have both a uniform and military firearms.

How much ammunition do I need?

Suggested for the main match (including long range and precision pistol): 75 rifle and 30 sidearm rounds. Sharpshooter side match: 21 shots.

Muster long range format

Same rifle as skirmishes. 15 shots, 100–300 yards. Three hits to advance. Closest is off-hand; no shooting sticks. Max 6 minutes; ties by time.

Precision pistol format

Same sidearm as skirmishes. 10 shots on the clock at a bull’s-eye. One-handed gets a 5-point handicap.

Sharpshooter side match

Any period-correct firearm from bench or sticks. Three distances 200–500 yards; sighting shots plus five for score per distance.

Military firearms

Any military-issued firearm in military configuration, 1860–1902. Examples: Springfield Trapdoor, Krag, Spencer; sidearms Colt SAA ’73, Schofield, etc.
